What a wonderful weekend to have Sofia's baptism! We had everyone in town, from Bobby & Heather & kids, to Marthi, Chris, Yimmers, and even Leslie & Andy & the boys.
Since Matt and Stephanie had little Kieran due in May, as well as their sister-in-law's sister Heidi who was due in May, they had invited us to celebrate Sofia's baptism along with them in a private ceremony at the church. We happily accepted and began to make plans.
We invited Bobby and Heather to be Sofia's godparents.
We had Vovo Zizo's baptismal gown flown in from Brazil for Sofia, just weeks after Stelinha and Malu were baptized in it, making Sofia the 32nd baby wear it from our family. She also wore the same bib that Ava and Alex wore, to establish a new tradition in our little family.
We prepared some delicious dishes to have at a reception for our families at the church right after the celebration, since everyone would likely be quite hungry.
We made Sofia's baptismal invitations and sent them out. Unfortunately Uncle Trey & family couldn't make it, but Grammy, Grandpa, and Aunt Laurie all came to celebrate Sofia.
The celebration was beautiful - we had 3 priests celebrating the baptism, and each one got to baptize one child. Sofia was baptized by Father Urell. She, like her siblings, did a fantastic job. Sofia slept through most of it and didn't seem the least bit bothered by having water poured on her head. Ava and Alex also behaved really well - Ava sat like a big girl next to Bridgette, looking through the hymnal, singing along as much as she could, and just wanting to really play the role of big sister. Alex wanted to see what was going on and really enjoyed the music part of the ceremony, so much so that he would say "More!" after the song was over.
The reception after the celebration was lots of fun, with good food and good company. The kids were quite ready for a nap afterwards, so we headed home to rest then rejoined everyone at Vovo and Voovoo's house for more food, fun, swimming, and visiting with Leslie, Andy, the boys, and Taylor (Heather's cousin).
It was a wonderful day, filled with a great celebration. To top it all off, Sofia got some really sweet gifts - including her first bible from her godparents, monogrammed and all! She also got a beautiful cross to hang in her room from Aunt Laurie and Uncle Kirk, a Precious Moments figurine from Grammy & Grandpa, and an engraved photo album from Vovo & Voovoo. Thank you to everyone for celebrating with us!

Oh the things these kids say!
Not a day goes by that I am not completely entertained by the things that the kids say. Whether it is a simple expression or a full conversation, I am constantly in awe of their vocabulary and amused by their thoughts.
Ava has always been very verbal, with an incredible vocabulary for such a little girl and very articulate. I fully expected her to take over Alex and speak for him, but that little guy really holds his own. He wants so badly to participate in the conversations, that he does his best to interject, share his thoughts, and express his opinion. There really is no need for tv or radio for me anymore, just listening to these two provides hours of entertainment!
Alex
Some of Alex's latest expressions are just too cute, and make me smile every time! Many of these expressions come from things that he is very much into lately.
For example, he loves to pretend he is talking on the phone. He walks around the house with old cell phones, and will say:
Alex: Just a minute, my phone is calling.
Me: Who is it?
Alex: It's a telemarketer (said in a very as-a-matter-of-fact way - likely due to the fact that he feels that telemarketers should be talked to, since mommy refuses to answer the phone whenever unknown random numbers pop up).
We've also begun the potty training process with Alex, since he is showing an interest in it and they are working on it with him at school. Some of the expressions that have come with this adventure include:
"Xixi (pronounced she-she) in the potty" - stated in a singing way every time he goes to the bathroom
"Cu-eh-qua" - His pronunciation for 'cueca' (underwear in Portuguese)
"Say 'potty' to go peepee in the toilet" - Alex tells me this to train me how they are attempting to potty train him at school, since apparently I should know how it is supposed to work ;)
And a few miscellaneous ones that I just love!
"Oh my goodness" - always said emphatically any time Alex is surprised, excited, or happy about something; like pizza for dinner, a package at the door, or seeing a lizard.
"That's terrible" - always said with a 'that's-too-bad' tone of voice to describe someone who got a scrape, bruise, or other injury. Sometimes it is shortened to just "terrible" when describing his own minor scrapes or dodois.
"Bur clok" = burp cloth for Sofia
"Lellow" = Yellow
"Baloo" = Blue
"Babojay" - a modified version of Voovoo's "Jabojay" term used a filler whenever the mood strikes. Alex will walk around singing to himself saying "babojay, babojay!!" as though it is a word that just feels good to say.
"buh-buh-mango" or "buh-buh-Marvin" - Alex's version of sounding things out. Ava often sounds out words to figure out what letter they start with, and Alex has begun copying her. However, he sticks with the sound of the letter 'B' for most things that begin with the letter 'M', thus the "buh-buh-mango".
"everything" - a word Alex likes to use when he is talking about something in a very "as a matter of fact" way, for example "Mommy, we need to go to Vovo's house to have lunch and swim and everything", or "At school I play with Marlowe, Ms. Jennifer, Ms. Virginia, everything". He is too cute for words!
Ava
We all know how expressive and wonderfully verbal Ava is, but I can't help but love the little mispronunciations and misuse of words that still linger considering she pronounces most everything so well. These include:
"May can I have?" = instead of simply may I have
"Brocomoli" = guacamole
"Gravinoli"= ravioli
"cousins" - it's not mispronounced, but rather used for any family, whether aunts, uncles, or actual cousins
"million dollars" - used to describe anything in a large amount, whether or not it requires a dollar value. Examples include "I love you a million dollars!" or "My school is a million million dollars from my house"
"DLS" - used to 'spell' words, since Daddy and I often spell words when trying to discuss something we aren't ready for the kids to chime in on. Ava uses it like this:
Ava: I want pizza.
Me: Pizza?
Ava: Yes, pizza, "D-L-S"
Ava, of course, continues to astound us with her abilities to catch on so quickly and to understand abstract concepts. The other day we drove by a power plant, and Ava asked what it was, how the electricity got there, how it breaks to make us lose power at our house, what it looks like, etc. Her questions were so deep and thought provoking, that Daddy and I had a hard time answering them ourselves.
I have never seen a 3-year-old make her own ponytails, using a hairband all by herself, without having been taught. She simply observed me doing it, then figured out how to do it on her own without looking. Her ponytail comes out perfectly in the back of her head, no knots, no stray hair, just a perfectly tied ponytail.
I was not aware little ones her age understood the concept of addition or subtraction. Ava is quite good at simple math, she is already able to understand 3+5=8 or 4-1=3, etc..
Even though she may not be able to spell quite yet, she is catching on. The other day I mentioned to Vovo that the kids liked jellybeans, so Vovo bought some. After nap at Vovo's house, this was our conversation:
Me: Ava, what would you like for snack?
Ava: What are my choices?
Vovo (telling me): I have J-E-L-L-Y...
Ava: J-E-L...jelly beans! (with the biggest smile on her face, and with me and Vovo stunned that she figured out what we were saying!)
Ava also cracks me up with her frustration with curly hair and wanting straight hair. The other day at bed time she said the following prayer: "Thank you God for my family and my friends, and please give me straight hair because I don't like my curly hair...right now please" - too funny!

I want to get married!
While looking online for underwear for Ava, we briefly saw a beautiful white dress that came across the screen.
Ava: I want to get married! I want to wear that dress. When can I get married?
Me: When you find your prince.
Ava: But I want to get married now!
Me: You do?
Alex: I want get married after dinner
Me: After dinner?
Ava: I want to get married after dinner too (in a slightly whiny voice)
...so thanks Chris...all we talk about in this house is wedding dresses for Ava, wanting to know how a bride and groom kiss, and trying to convince Ava that she will find her own prince that is not Voovoo, Daddy, or Alex...though she often ignores me and asks Alex if he wants to get married anyway!

Ava is 4...and Vovo is 65!
I can't believe my baby Ava is 4 years old today!!! What a wonderful, smart, sweet, feisty, strong, amazing, incredible little girl she has become. She amazes me and challenges me, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel so incredibly blessed to be her mom.
Today we went to lunch with Voovoo and Vovo for Ava and Vovo's official birthday. We went to Mia Bella and had a great time (though a little chaotic, since the food was taking a little too long). Ava LOVES going out, seeing people, and having the chance to talk to everyone - she is my social butterfly! At the end of the day, we went to swim classes for Ava and Alex - summer has officially begun!!

Ava took advantage of Voovoo's lunch break to have him read her new books to her...soon enough she will be reading (or memorizing) them on her own!

Ava's fourth birthday party
Great weather, great company, great food...what else could we ask for on Ava's 4th birthday weekend? All Ava has been talking about all week is "what day is it?", "how many more days until my party?", "who is coming to my party?", "can we make cupcakes yet?", "it's my birthday and Vovo's birthday, right?"
True to tradition, we had Ava's birthday party at Voovoo and Vovo's house so that Ava could have her pool party - she would like nothing more than to be a little fish. She also likes nothing more than celebrating her birthday alongside Vovo, so that they can play together, blow out their candles together, and have a great time!
Grammy & Grandpa came, Vovo and Voovoo were there (of course), Bobby, Heather, Bridgette & Aiden were in town, Leslie, Andy, Greyson, Asher, and Quinn drove up, all to celebrate with Ava. We missed Christina, Ayim, and Marthi, but Vovo sent them a great email to share about our day:
"We had fun, and I mean a lot of fun! So much so that Ava fell asleep with exhaustion around 5 p.m. in my arms, by the pool while all the commotion was still going on. Her daddy was already taking a nap on the small sofa in the porch, so I transported her to his arms. Except for the little interruption in his sleep, the two went on for a while longer. There were pics taken, so we are all waiting on the photographers availability to disclose that precious moment. (Nana/Heather)
Bridgette turned into a mermaid and spent the entire day, from 10 till 6 in the water, stopping for a hot dog and that was it. We heard that she had a night full of dreams, probably the other creatures of the sea disturbing a very deserved rest. But she woke up beautiful, her eyes shining even more.
Aiden also took to the water. All he needed was a float or a noodle and off he went into the pool. His batteries never go down, incredible energy he has stored. A small detail: 'Do I make you happy, Vovó?' I melt.
Alex is more reserved and prefers if mommy or vovó are in the water. He too had lots of fun. He had more guacamole than a Mexican grown up man. I thought he might even get sick later on, but he absolutely loved every bit of it. And yes, there was a lot of double, triple, multiple dippings with the same chip. All he cared really was the guacamole. Sandra makes the best guacamole in the U.S. He was the only one to take that precious nap after lunch.
Leslie loves to be with us and even stretched their stay for dinner. Bobby prepared the best brisket all day and we all savored it. He got tons of compliments on it. We were 7 kids and 8 adults in the kitchen. Food seemed to vanish right in front of our eyes.
The Regitz did not come, the children were sick. Might as well, we had so many kids in the pool, we would be a nervous wreck with 3 more.
Grammy and grandpa also came for a while, they had graduation to go to. They have the extremes for grandchildren: newborn to college age. It must be a riot.
I will let Nana tell you more... (I think I covered it all)."
Needless to say, we had a fabulous time! We were all exhausted by the end of it... all but Sofia. She decided to stay up until midnight...just because she can. I might be one tired mommy, but it is all worth it to spend time with everyone and to see that wonderful smile on my little Ava's face.
Wearing the beautiful dress Quequel got her last fall
Ava riding the awesome lizard Leslie got Ava while Greyson stood guard
Asher and Quinn loving their cupcakes
Ava wearing the beautiful Snow White dress Grammy got her for her birthday (knocking it out of the park with that one! Ava was so excited to get another Snow White princess dress, since she literally wore to pieces the one tia Stela got her for Halloween.)
While the children play, and the mothers keep watch...the dads sleep!?!
Ava and Daddy passed out on the couch outside
